A place where is, Ancient animals, deep swamps exist. A place where is very beautiful, quiet, still, mysterious but lethally dangerous. That is a place where the story ' The Underneath ' by Kathi Appelt played. Once you open this book, I dare say that you will not be able to stop turning the pages. The book is full of tempts which will highly attract you. So let me invite you into this book.
This book is about 'lonliness'. Each four main characters has their own loneliness but as the story goes on, they start to find their brightness in their heart. The story starts with description of abandoned calico cat. An abandoned calico cat is lured deep into the bayou by the baying of an old hound dog, Ranger. The dog’s tortured owner, Gar Face, an alcoholic, is obsessed with the hunt of an elusive 100 foot long alligator. The cat gives birth to two kittens (Sabine and Puck) underneath Gar Face’s porch. Eventually they are discovered and the family is split up. Meanwhile, in a clay jar buried deep underneath a dying tree lives Grandmother Moccasin, who has a story of her own that will come to affect the lives of our main characters. This is the main plot of this story. I won't tell you the end of this book. But what I could surely say to you is that, the end of this book will be the thing that you will love - with thrills and satisfaction. So I really recommend you to read this book.
Let me tell you why I am such a lover of this book. The thing that I really enjoyed about this book, is the insightful, poetic, sensitive sentences. Each, every sentences and words are not like boring or normal. Itself express loneliness and rhythm. This beautiful sentences made me could concentrate on this story more, stimulated my imagination and made me feel same as how the character felt in the story. For example, when the Puck( the kitten of calico cat ) separated from his mother and realized that because his mother dead he could 'never' see his mother again. He became really sad. The book describes this situation by explaining word 'never' as [ It's a soft-sounding word , "never", but its velvety timbre can't hide its sharp edges. Especially to a small cat who has broken the rules and conjured the word in the first place ] Also, the plot of this story , itself made me enjoy it a lot. It was not like a normal book without any imagination. It is full of mysteries and fantasy.
If you are a very sensitive person who love to sympathize on others, you will love this book. I could sure. And even if you are not a person who could easily have sympathy, by the words and plots in this attractive magical book you will soon became the big fan of this book as I did. So at least once, I truly recommend you to read this book.
